Orange County at a glance

Orange County has 13,616 registered electric and hybrid vehicles, 13.2% of all registrations, up 117% since 2020 (NCACC from NCDOT data, July 2026). These counts include standard hybrids, so the number of plug-in EVs is lower. The county has about 58 public charging locations (AFDC, October 2026).

Chapel Hill has about 33 of them. Most Town of Chapel Hill stations have charged $0.20/kWh since August 2024, plus $1 an hour if a car stays plugged in more than 30 minutes after a full charge. At home, overnight charging on Duke's EV rate or Piedmont Electric's super off-peak price costs a fraction of that.

Who permits your address

Chapel Hill and Carrboro each run their own inspections and permit portals. Orange County Planning & Inspections covers unincorporated Orange County and the Town of Hillsborough, where a 15% town surcharge is added to the county fee.

Before you hire an electrician

  • Check the electrician's license with the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. How to check.
  • Make sure the quote includes the permit and inspection for your town or the county.
  • In a townhome or HOA community, get written approval before work starts.
  • Ask for an itemized invoice (materials, labor and permit on separate lines). Duke requires it for its credit.
